Character Name: Azul Ashengrotto
Series: Twisted Wonderland
Age: 17
From When?: Book 3, Chapter ~16ish.
(Note this is headcanon!)
Azul has made many enemies after the stint he pulled with the exams, and he's pretty terrible at flying.
A sabotage attempt by vengeful students leads to his broom going completely out of control while high in the air. A combination of a well-timed distraction with an amateur attempt at a dangerous spell leads to disastrous consequences; before anyone can reach Azul, he crashes, dying shortly afterward.
Inmate Justification: Azul's sly "deals" are carefully manipulated contracts designed to shortchange the recipient while benefitting himself. So ambitious and shameless he is that he even successfully forced the headmage of his school to make a deal with him. In addition, he isn't afraid to resort to blackmail, manipulation or force to make others cooperate with him.
Arrival: Agreed to come.
Abilities/Powers:
Animal Linguistics: Azul can talk to animals! The intricacies of animal language aren't really made clear, it's just known to be a class in Night Raven College. At the least he can speak to the professor's cat and understand him quite well. I'd imagine he's probably at least passing with most mammals, is very good with aquatic animals, and maybe knows some things for the others.
Proposed nerf: None.
Elemental Spells: Azul has control over the elemental spells of TW: fire, water, nature and void. In game, the strength of the abilities depends on the card you use, its rarity, and how much it is leveled up. As he is a house warden and has practiced magic diligently from a young age, it can be presumed he is, in comparison to the average student, fairly more skillful and stronger.
Proposed nerf: All spells that can be cast are of Type I (the weakest type) and also reset to level 1. Maybe with diligent training he'll be able to relevel his skills? However, he would remain stuck with the Type I set, unless through a future deal with The Warden.
Signature Spell/Unique Magic: Azul's spell, "It's A Deal", allows him to take the powers and abilities of others and causes them quite a great deal of physical stress and pain in the process. Such an incredibly powerful and dangerous spell this is that it necessitated him to create a filter to dampen its effects: the Golden Contract. By using this artifact, he nullifies the physical discomfort and only takes one agreed-upon power or ability. This also reduces the rapid accumulation of blot he would otherwise have as a result, a mechanic discussed in further detail in Special Notes.
The Golden Contract comes with the restriction that any powers used through it only remain in effect so long as the Contract remains intact.
Proposed nerf: Can only use his magic through the Golden Contract and its accompanying filter.
HP Regen: Pretty self-explanatory. Gradual cure magic.
Proposed nerf: Nada.
Overblot Form: Important to note that this is not a voluntary power, but a result from a mage's pen accumulating too much blot. In Overblot Form, a mage succumbs to their negative emotions and lashes out at everyone in a blind rage. For Azul, he gains the following abilities: Witch's Pact I, II and III (nature magic), and Waves, Obey Me I, II and III (water magic). This form is extremely taxing upon the mind and body of a mage. Medical attention is needed once they revert.
Proposed nerf: None? Maybe? Since a mage loses all sense of reason and friend/foe in this scenario they tend to avoid it anyway, especially as something purportedly terrible happens to them should they remain overblotted too long. Could make for a fun plot down the road!
Anemone Puppeteer: Azul can cause an anemone to sprout atop a being's head, which is strong enough to forcibly drag them around wherever he wishes. Not sure how this is cast but is probably single target and line-of-sight? Has to be used with a Golden Contract maybe ??? idk man it's a gacha game,
Proposed nerf: The anemone can still be produced, but loses the dragging ability. So it's just kinda there. It can be easily pulled off without pain or eventually falls off on its own, disappearing (into magical sparkles!) once removed.
Inmate Information: Azul is "Mafia".
...I think he might actually be mafia. It hasn't been said explicitly in the game but everything about him heavily implies it, from his jazzy restaurant front for his shady backdoor deals, to his cutthroat mannerisms and the authority with which he commands his two dormmates, who act more like both his personal guards and servants. I mean c'mon.
Azul is a punk who is too cocky for his own good. He thrives on overpowering and especially outwitting others, whether it be in a deal, in a simple interaction or even a board game. His arrogance stems from his incredible attention to detail and ruthless work ethic. As an example, he created a study guide by using the past exams of the class... One-hundred years' worth, that is. He ascribes what he offers as "generosity" and puts the onus on other students for not reading the fine lines of his dozens-of-pages-long contracts.
He is incredibly cautious, and absolutely refuses to accept aid unless it comes in the form of an exchange for fear of it being used against him later on. So extreme is this that he even refuses flying coaching from a fellow colleague when both of them are threatened with extensive remedial lessons until that colleague finally asks for Azul's study guide in exchange.
Crimes committed include:
Azul is fiercely competitive and approaches every challenge with gusto, doing all that he can to give himself an advantage. In the Board Game Club, he goes so far as to practice hours of carefully rolling dice to heighten the chances of him rolling the number he wants. When the headmage suddenly drops in on a lesson, he grins in anticipation of showing off the fruits of his labor. To say the least, he thrives off of challenges.
Path to Redemption:
If you know Tales of the Abyss: Jade would be the ideal kind of warden for him.
If you don't know Tales of the Abyss: Someone who can recognize Azul as still a child while treating him as an adult. Azul really needs someone as least as sharp and observant as he, not only to prevent him from taking advantage of them, but to earn respect from Azul. Softness is seen as weakness, and anyone seen as too soft will ultimately have Azul rejecting or at least not understanding their benign morals. Thus, it would benefit him to have someone who may at times be a little morally ambiguous themselves, or have done such things in the past.
He is through and through a business man, so the truest path to graduation for him would be an acceptance that treating people with respect, kindness and honesty is more advantageous to him than being sneaky and manipulative. A warden who can realize this and guide him towards this line of thinking will be most beneficial.
Azul has been very heavily encouraged towards being a manipulative little shit by his family, his two closest friends, and by all his colleagues at Night Raven College since... the six "Great Ones" that are held in such high esteem there are literally all Disney Villains. (I know, it's probably impossible to guess which one he's inspired by.) He's very, very stuck in his ways to an obnoxious degree and will require a patient warden since they're going to be fighting an uphill battle for... awhile.
Part of the problem is, Azul's fine with playing the long game, too. And as he's so manipulative, it definitely isn't beyond him to play "good behavior" in an attempt to get off scot-free. So... yeah, warden's also going to need a solid bullshit radar for this one. He will need to build a great amount of trust and respect both for his warden to have any chance of being honest and upfront to them.
I'm still a bit ??? on how this might all go down and exactly how it is he'll change for the better, so I hope that's enough rambling for this section?? If not, lmk!
History: As a child, he was bullied extensively for being part octopus when all the other merchildren were part fish. The ostracized Azul was a crybaby who would flee to hide in a crab pot. He felt powerless and humiliated— and this birthed an intense desire to gain power over those who'd wronged him. By making use of his tentacles, he mastered magic at a young age. He also met Jade and Floyd, who found him entertaining and interesting. The trio subsequently became thick as thieves.
So repulsed by who he'd been before he'd taken action that he takes every measure possible to separate his present self from his past self. He destroys all the pictures of his childhood that he can get his hands on, and seeks the abilities and powers of others to keep feelings of helplessness at bay. Even just the mention of the past in general has him sneering in disgust.
Unfortunately, this deep shame has also become associated with his true form. Even when his true form would be more optimal and natural in the current environment, he opts for his human form.
At Night Raven College, he was followed by his loyal moray friends and subsequently ends up as the house warden for the Octavinelle Dorm. He becomes rather notorious for his backdoor proceedings and supposed ability to grant nearly any wish— owing to his incredible diligence and resourcefulness.
During his first year, he creates a study guide for the final exams by pouring over the past hundred years' worth of tests. He then uses this as a bargaining chip in making deals with his fellow students. While the details aren't delved into, it's most likely a similar tactic to what he does again the year after.
That deal involves a bet where if the student given the exam can get into the top 50 scores of all students, Azul will continue to freely provide them with study guides until they graduate, and the power or ability that they give up in escrow will be returned to them. However, if they do not get into the top 50, that power/ability is resigned to him. (This is likely the furthest he went in the Freshman year, then he got extra cheeky in his Sophomore year and decided all losers would have to personally serve him until they graduate as well.) The catch, of course, was that he did not disclose to any of the students just how many others had made the same deal, ensuring inevitable losers.
As Night Raven College prided itself on its strong magic users, the lack of powers in many of them posed a problem for its reputation. Thus, he struck a deal with the Headmage himself: he would relinquish the students' powers (and give the college ten percent of his proceeds) in exchange for the ability to run his restaurant front, Mostro Café, in the Octavinelle Dorm.
As mentioned, he would pull this stunt yet again the year after. (And since the college is basically capacity: delinquents, the ones who got fooled the year before were probably too proud and spiteful to let anyone in on the know). Once the top 50 are announced, his anemone spell takes the losers to his dorm, where he announces their predicament. Though the unhappy mob attempts to destroy their contracts by force, with the aid of Jade and Floyd, he skillfully bluffs them into believing said contracts are immune to magic.
Not too long after he has carried out his plot, he finds himself in The Barge.

I'd rather try my hand at flying again than sift through more of this drivel.
[sigh!! anyway]
I'd like to know upfront who here should be avoided if we value our lives. Especially as there doesn't seem to be any distinction between the kinds of Inmates.
[mainly the ones who have and haven't recently participated in murder,]
My name is Azul Ashengrotto, and I've been lumped in with said "Inmates". A term much more fitting for some than others.
[He pushes up his glasses with such! Disdain! Before his expression smooths out.]
Now then, is there an organized repository of information on this place and its inhabitants?
Sample RP:
[When he awakens, it's with a sharp gasp. His face feels dreadfully cold and clammy, and his hands curl tight into the sheets underneath him.
... sheets?
He lies there, staring up at the ceiling. A lot of things... hurt. But it's more the ache of healing pains than the sharp sting of fresh wounds.
Slowly, he swallows, and lets out a terse breath as his expression forcibly smooths out. After another moment, he slowly releases his white-knuckled grasp.
Once his heart isn't pounding quite so hard, he carefully sits up. Slowly, he takes a look over his body.
So... it'd been real, and not some near death-induced hallucination.
Where his blood had been running cold moments prior, it now boils as his hand comes up to brush against the tip of his glasses. He'd known that there were students who would be pathetically insolent about the deal they'd lost. He'd anticipated that some would be foolish enough to attempt to exact revenge on him in a moment of vulnerability.
He hadn't thought they'd have the gall to try it during class, or be stupid enough to recklessly utilize such a dangerous sabotage method.
Idiots... Idiots.
He closes his eyes and takes a slow breath, holds it, then lets it out. He lets his hand fall away as he smooths his expression out once more. He would have to dole out the proper punishment later, once he was able. For now, it was clear he was no longer at Night Raven College.
Mm... that's right. He'd made a deal. The fact that he could only barely recollect the conversation was quite troublesome, indeed. It didn't help that he was well aware he hadn't been in a rational mindset at the time. No matter how much he'd tried, he could only be so unruffled when suddenly faced with an untimely death.
What all had exactly agreed to...?
He supposed there was no point in worrying about it. His back had been against the wall, anyway. He certainly wasn't going to simply succumb to death when a way out was offered— dubious as it was...
It was clear that whatever that person (man?) wanted, cooperation was essential. So it seemed, at least, since a deal had been made and he found himself waking up in a relatively hospitable environment. He'd had his pen with him, as well.
It was... troubling, really. Just how much power did his supposed savior have to allow him such freedom without a care?
... he would have to tread carefully. Gather as much intel as he could, and play his cards close to his chest. If his cooperation was needed, then he would make sure to only offer it sparingly and at the points it'd be most impactful to make that commodity as precious as possible.
Now, to get his bearings and find out who else, if anyone, was stuck in this mess with him.]
Special Notes: FIRST OFF... apologies for the text dump, just want to make sure I'm covering everything here.
According to the Headmage, ""blot" is a form of waste that is created as a byproduct of using magic." "Casting spells consumes magical energy, and in the process, expels blot." Very little is currently known about it, such as "it is terrifically toxic, and excessive amounts can wreak havoc on a mage's mind and body."
"With sufficient rest, blot will vanish from your magestone.
This is why a magestone is so valuable to magic users.
Not only does it aid your casting, it also serves as a lightning rod of sorts, to prevent blot from accumulating within the caster."
"The accumulation of blot is significantly affected by the sorcerer's mental state.
Anger, fear, panic, sorrow... Harboring those sorts of negative energies hastens the accumulation of blot by a significant degree.
This, in turn, leads to the dreadful state known as "overblot.""
In short, the mages in the world of Twisted Wonderland rely upon a magestone to keep them safe from blot. These extremely precious rocks are, in Night Raven College, kept on the students in the form of a pen.
I'd like to request Azul come to the Barge with his pen if that's alright! Since.. canonically, being stripped of nearly all his powers is what makes him lose his shit and overblot.

Crimes committed include:
- Tricking a small army of students into a lose-lose situation and subsequently relinquishing them of their powers

- Manipulation
- Bribery
